Brother Wolf Animal Rescue Finds a New Home in Asheville — A Symbol of Hope Nearly Two Years After Hurricane Helene

Sometimes, a building is more than just bricks and mortar.

Sometimes, it represents resilience, hope, and a community that refuses to give up.

That’s exactly what Brother Wolf Animal Rescue has become for Asheville and Western North Carolina.

Nearly two years after Hurricane Helene devastated their longtime campus, Brother Wolf has announced the purchase of a new permanent home on Tunnel Road, inside the former Black Dome Mountain Sports building. It’s more than just a new address—it’s the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the region’s most impactful nonprofit organizations.

A Lifeline for Animals Across Western North Carolina

Since opening its doors in 2007, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue has changed the lives of well over 100,000 animals through adoption programs, foster networks, shelter partnerships, pet retention initiatives, and community outreach. Every year, thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other companion animals have found loving homes because of the dedication of their staff, volunteers, and supporters.

But Brother Wolf’s mission has always gone beyond simply finding homes for pets.

The organization has become a resource for families struggling to keep their pets, an advocate for responsible animal care, and a trusted partner for overcrowded shelters throughout Western North Carolina and beyond. Their extensive foster network, volunteer base, and partnerships have helped countless communities care for animals during times of need.

For many of us who call this region home, Brother Wolf isn’t just an animal rescue.

It’s part of the fabric of our community.

Then Came Hurricane Helene

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene forever changed the landscape of Western North Carolina.

Brother Wolf’s campus, located near the Swannanoa River, was overwhelmed by catastrophic floodwaters. While staff and volunteers heroically evacuated approximately 150 animals before the worst flooding arrived, the rescue’s buildings, equipment, and physical assets were destroyed.

It would have been understandable if an organization facing that level of devastation had taken years to recover.

Brother Wolf didn’t stop.

Instead, they adapted.

Operating as a foster-based rescue without a permanent adoption center, they continued rescuing animals, supporting pet owners, coordinating adoptions, and serving communities across the region—all while planning for the future.

That’s what makes this announcement so meaningful.

A New Beginning on Tunnel Road

Brother Wolf has officially purchased the former Black Dome Mountain Sports building on Tunnel Road, where it will create a brand-new adoption center designed to serve even more animals and families than before. Architects, engineers, and animal welfare specialists have spent more than a year helping shape plans for the new facility, which will significantly expand adoption capacity and strengthen the organization’s lifesaving mission.

For animal lovers, this is wonderful news.

For Asheville, it’s something even bigger.

Tunnel Road has been one of the corridors working hard to recover and reinvent itself following Hurricane Helene. Seeing an organization like Brother Wolf invest in the future of this area sends a powerful message that revitalization is happening one project at a time.

The addition of a vibrant adoption center will bring new energy, visitors, volunteers, and hope to a part of Asheville that continues to rebuild.

More Than an Animal Rescue

One of the things we’ve always admired about Brother Wolf is that they never define success by the number of animals they shelter.

They define it by lives changed.

Every adoption creates a new family.

Every foster home provides another chance.

Every volunteer gives an animal hope.

Every donation helps ensure another pet gets medical care, food, shelter, or a second chance at life.

It’s a mission powered by compassion, and one that has inspired thousands of people throughout Western North Carolina to get involved.

Thank You, Brother Wolf

At To Asheville & Beyond, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to the staff who never stopped showing up.

Thank you to the volunteers who opened their homes when animals needed them most.

Thank you to every foster family, donor, adopter, and supporter who helped carry Brother Wolf through one of the most difficult chapters in its history.

And thank you for believing that even after unimaginable loss, rebuilding was possible.

We can’t wait to watch this new chapter unfold on Tunnel Road and see the thousands of lives—both human and animal—that will be changed because of it.
