Asheville, North Carolina, has been without passenger train service for nearly 50 years. The last scheduled train departed on August 8, 1975 — ending an era that began almost a century earlier, when the first passenger train rolled into town on October 3, 1880.
The arrival of the railroad back then transformed Asheville into a hub of travel, commerce, and tourism. Now, after decades of waiting, the prospect of Amtrak returning has sparked new excitement — and new urgency.
The Plans: Asheville to Salisbury
As of today, Amtrak plans to connect Asheville to Salisbury, NC, by 2034. The proposed line could include stops in Black Mountain, Old Fort, Marion, Morganton, Hickory, and Statesville — linking Western North Carolina to the broader Amtrak system.
Once in Salisbury or Charlotte, passengers could connect to iconic Amtrak routes, including the Crescent (New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, New Orleans) and the Carolinian (Raleigh, Durham, and beyond). This could mean a true “mountain-to-beach” experience — from Asheville to Wilmington, NC — all by train.
Why Biltmore Village?
The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene left major gaps along Asheville’s rail corridor. Biltmore Village, already steeped in history and accessibility, could become the perfect location for a new station. With new development opportunities emerging, Amtrak has a chance to change the game for Asheville once again.
The Challenges
Not all routes are possible. The famous “Saluda Grade” has been sold to Rails to Trails — a positive for outdoor recreation but a setback for potential train service. Still, other paths remain viable, keeping the dream alive.
A City Ready for Rail Again
Times have changed. Asheville has grown into one of America’s premier destinations for tourism, craft beer, food, and culture. Western North Carolina is poised for another leap forward. Passenger rail service would not only expand travel options but also strengthen the region’s economy, sustainability, and connectivity.
