It’s been one of those moments you can never un-see. I remember driving over the I-240 overpass that crosses Swannanoa River Road just after the storm. Family in the backseat, tinted windows, hearts racing. To the right, the river had become something else — wild, unforgiving, and unstoppable.
When we got near the U-Haul location, there were trucks floating, boxes gone, muddy water everywhere. Cars stopped in the highway, police trying to keep folks safe, the asphalt slippery, the river powerful. That was Hurricane Helene — a flood river tearing through our city, leaving a scar that’s still healing.
🏢 A Bit of U-Haul History in Asheville
U-Haul has been part of our landscape for decades. The Asheville U-Haul office on Swannanoa River Road has served countless families, folks moving in, moving out, helping small businesses haul supplies, events, furniture — it’s a backbone.
When Helene hit, that office was washed over. Trucks were scattered like skipped stones. Entire road sections near the property were destroyed or swallowed. U-Haul, like many businesses near riverbanks, felt the raw, violent force of nature. The sign out front was battered, the interior flooded, storage units compromised. The kind of devastation that makes you wonder, how long until it’s back?

🤝 Why this Matters
U-Haul isn’t just a storage company. It’s a lifeline for folks across WNC. Movers, students, families, businesses — so many depend on this place. Losing it meant more than inconvenience. It meant uncertainty, loss, trying to make do.
Seeing U-Haul come back is a sign. It’s a promise that even when waters rise, communities rebuild. The river may roar, but our spirit roars louder.
