RAD Renaissance: A Celebration of Art, Resilience & Renewal in Asheville’s River Arts District

Asheville’s River Arts District (RAD) is having a comeback — and it’s going to be radical. On May 10, 2025, we invite you to join artists, makers, neighbors, and storytellers for the RAD Renaissance, a day-long celebration of life, art, and community in one of Asheville’s most vibrant cultural hubs.

.

After the devastation brought by Hurricane Helene, this district — one that’s long been a symbol of Asheville’s soul — faced unprecedented flooding and damage. Studios, galleries, and gathering spaces like Marquee were hit hard, and yet… the spirit of creativity remained unshaken.

.

Now, the comeback is in full swing.

🌟 A NEW DAY IN THE DISTRICT

.

The RAD Renaissance will feature:

.

  • Open studios and gallery walks

  • Live artist demonstrations

  • The debut of the RAD Art Market — a new open-air marketplace for original art and handmade goods

  • Community installations and hands-on activities throughout the Upper River Arts District (Roberts Street, Artful Way, Depot Street & Clingman Ave)

.

If you were at RAD Fest, you know how this community shows up — and we’re ready to do it again. Let’s make this another unforgettable day for local artists and those who love what they create.

🎨 Featured Artists in the Video

.

In our preview video, we spotlight two incredible artists helping to lead this creative revival:

.

Andreina Bates

.

Interviewed at the Foundation Studios, with flood damage still visible around her, Andreina speaks with warmth and power about creating through hardship. Known for her mixed-media work layered with vibrant colors and raw textures, her art often blends themes of nature, memory, and identity. Her work is emotionally resonant, visually bold, and deeply human.

.

Philip DeAngelo

.

We caught up with Philip in his own gallery — a cornerstone of the RAD and a calm, soulful space. Philip’s work is contemporary, layered, and landscape-inspired, often built with acrylics and metallic leafing that shimmer with light. His signature style blends clean lines with deep emotional undertones. After the floods, Philip didn’t just reopen his doors — he made room for other displaced artists in his gallery, showing the heart of a true community builder.

🧡 A Call to the Community

.

The RAD Renaissance isn’t just about art. It’s about healing, reconnecting, and honoring the creative spirit that defines Asheville. This is our chance to show up — to celebrate the grit and beauty of the RAD, and to support the artists who make it magic.

.

📍 Join us May 10 and help make the River Arts District a place of inspiration, connection, and joy once again. Let’s make the RAD, RAD again.
