After more than seven months of closure due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, the Lowe’s Home Improvement store at 89 South Tunnel Road in East Asheville has officially reopened its doors. The grand reopening, held on May 2, 2025, marked a significant milestone in the community’s ongoing recovery efforts.

The Wrath of Hurricane Helene

On September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene unleashed unprecedented rainfall and flooding across Western North Carolina. The Lowe’s store suffered extensive interior damage, leading to its temporary closure. The storm’s aftermath left much of Asheville, including the Biltmore Village and River Arts District, submerged and isolated due to power outages and infrastructure damage.

The Road to Recovery

In the wake of the disaster, Lowe’s demonstrated unwavering commitment to the community. The company invested in extensive repairs and renovations, transforming the store into a modernized facility equipped with the latest fixtures and offerings. Over 100 original employees returned, and new roles were created to bolster the workforce.

Grand Reopening Celebration

The reopening event was a community affair, featuring collaborations with local businesses and organizations. Attendees enjoyed treats from Nothing Bundt Cakes, refreshments from Coca-Cola, plus coverage & entertainment provided by Eddie Foxx of 99.9 KISS Country radio. The celebration also highlighted Lowe’s partnership with the Appalachia Service Project, showcasing tiny homes donated to residents in need.
