From Broken Bones to Baking Dough: The Inspiring Comeback of Favilla’s NY Pizza in West Asheville

When you talk about true local flavor in Asheville, Favilla’s NY Pizza is a name that always rises to the top — just like their dough. Since 2011, owner Andy Favilla has been slinging New York–style pizza that feels like home. Thin crusts. Hearty Sicilian pies. Calzones that weigh as much as your lunch break. For over a decade, it’s been one of West Asheville’s go-to comfort spots.

But 2024 and 2025 have tested Andy and his team like never before.

🌧️ First Came Hurricane Helene

When Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina in September 2024, many local restaurants were hit hard — and Favilla’s NY Pizza was no exception. Flooding, power loss, and supply chain delays forced small businesses across Asheville to fight for survival.

Through it all, Andy kept the ovens warm and the lights on as best he could, determined to serve his loyal community even when the city was rebuilding.

🚗 Then Came the Accident

Just six weeks ago, tragedy struck again. Andy was in a serious car accident on Patton Avenue that left doctors fearing he might never walk again. His spine, hip, ribs, and even his heart were severely injured.

For many, that would’ve been the end of the story.
But not for Andy.

He faced months of pain, surgeries, and rehab — and step by step, he’s now literally getting back on his feet. With the help of a walker and a whole lot of grit, he’s back at Favilla’s part-time, rebuilding both his strength and his business.

🍕 The Pizza Still Hits Different

If you’ve ever had Favilla’s, you know it’s more than a pizza joint — it’s a West Asheville institution.

Their menu hits all the comfort notes:

  • Grandma’s Pizza (a local favorite)

  • Sicilian-style pies — thick, square, perfectly crisped

  • Calzones & Stromboli that pack a punch

  • Hot & cold subs, pinwheels, and salads

Andy’s philosophy has always been simple: good food, no shortcuts, and a lot of love.

Even as he rebuilds his crew after months of recovery and turnover, that same heart runs through every slice.

❤️ The Spirit of a True Local

Andy wanted to send a message to his longtime customers — a heartfelt thank you for sticking with him through everything. If your last visit wasn’t perfect, he wants you to know he heard you, and he’s back in action, stronger every day.

He’s living proof that Asheville’s local spirit doesn’t give up — it gets back up.
