As Hendersonville readies its hard hats and hiking boots, a momentous celebration awaits 🚶♂️ Walk, roll, or cycle into history on July 18, 2025, as the Ecusta Trail officially reopens—a testament to resilience, community, and mountain pride.
.
From Railbed to Resort-Trail
.
-
History: Originally a Southern Railway rail line built in the early 1900s for Appalachian freight and passengers, the corridor fell into disuse before its reinvention as a beloved multi-use trail.
-
Helene’s Wrath: In August 2023, Hurricane Helene unleashed flash floods that obliterated trail bridges, steps, and access points—leaving parts of the trail impassable and depriving the region of a major outdoor resource.
-
Community Revival: Local coalitions—Hendersonville, Henderson County, and Western NC conservation groups—collaborated with FEMA and private donors to fund reconstruction, trail realignment, and flood-proofing.
-
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony: Join the grand reopening on July 18, beginning at the Hendersonville Welcome Center (401 N. Main Street):
-
-
-
2:00 PM: Community Blessing & Remarks
-
3:00 PM: Ribbon-Cutting
-
3:30–6:00 PM: Celebration Walk, Vendor Stroll, and Live Music
