Asheville’s Path to Recovery: A Glimpse into Post-Helene Restoration Efforts on Tunnel Road

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, East Asheville’s vibrant commercial hub along Tunnel Road South has faced significant challenges. While the main mall and stores on Tunnel Road remain bustling, the southern stretch leading to La Rumba Restaurant, Target, and AMC Theaters remains inaccessible from this end. Access is currently possible via Fairview Road near River Ridge or through a series of back-road detours. Cleanup operations are underway, and there’s optimism that this vital artery will reopen soon.

Walgreens on Tunnel Road South:

.

The Walgreens located at the intersection of South Tunnel Road and Swannanoa River Road suffered extensive damage during the flooding. Abandoned vehicles and debris littered its parking lot, a stark testament to the storm’s fury. As of now, the store remains closed, with no official reopening date announced. The community eagerly awaits its return, recognizing its importance in providing essential health services.

Lowe’s Home Improvement:

.

Lowe’s on South Tunnel Road experienced severe interior damage due to the flooding. The store has been temporarily closed since the storm. However, there’s good news: plans are in place to reopen in April or May, following extensive repairs. In the interim, Lowe’s has established a pop-up store at 3 South Tunnel Road, offering a limited selection of essential items to support the community’s immediate needs.

Ole Guacamoles:

.

The beloved Ole Guacamoles restaurant on Tunnel Road South was not spared from Helene’s wrath. Both the Asheville location and its counterpart in Black Mountain were destroyed by the hurricane. Tragically, the Johnson City, Tennessee location had already closed in late 2024. The loss of these establishments has left a void in the local culinary scene, and patrons hope for their return in the future.

U-Haul Facility:

.

The U-Haul facility in Asheville faced catastrophic damage during the storm. Floodwaters swept away trucks, carrying them downstream, and the facility itself was left in ruins. During the height of the flooding, Asheville Police Department officers were on-site, ensuring public safety and preventing onlookers from approaching the compromised bridge near the facility.

Access to La Rumba Restaurant, Target, and AMC Theaters:

The bridges connecting Swannanoa River Road to establishments like La Rumba Restaurant, Target, AMC Theaters, Haverty’s and Chuck E. Cheese have been compromised. Foundational repair is almost complete on the larger bridge, while work is slated to begin once debris removal is complete on the smaller bridge. While these businesses are open, access requires taking alternative routes due to ongoing road closures. Barriers have been erected to prevent traffic from coming anywhere near the damaged bridge, ensuring public safety during the reconstruction phase.

Swannanoa River Road Destruction:

.

The stretch of Swannanoa River Road from Tunnel Road toward Biltmore Village bore the brunt of Hurricane Helene’s force. The area was inundated, leading to significant structural damage and debris accumulation. Recovery efforts are in full swing, with crews working tirelessly to restore normalcy. The resilience of the Asheville community shines through as businesses rebuild and neighbors support one another during this challenging time.

As Asheville embarks on the road to recovery, the collective spirit and determination of its residents promise a brighter, revitalized future for this cherished mountain city.
